The Advanced Field Training Officer course is a two-day program designed to enhance the communication, teaching, and documentation skills of current Field Training Officers (FTOs) as well as department FTO coordinators and commanders. This field training officer course is applicable for both law enforcement and corrections professionals. In today’s litigious society, the importance of effective training and thorough documentation cannot be overstated, especially regarding the crucial role of FTOs in training new officers and minimizing the risk of negligent retention. Through lectures, group discussions, and interactive exercises, participants will engage in advanced instructor development, deepening their knowledge and skills and becoming more effective trainers and mentors. This course serves as an invaluable resource for those committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and excellence in their departments. Additionally, students will explore leadership training for law enforcement, focusing on the FTO as a teacher and mentor and recognizing this role as their first true leadership position. Topics covered include generational differences, overcoming personality conflicts, understanding adult learning distinctions, training mistakes, a review of typical trainee deficiencies along with training techniques to address each issue, and essential documentation practices. Students will also review real body-worn camera videos to integrate the two days of training effectively. This course is certified by the Southeastern FTO Association (SEFTOA).

While the general instructor curriculum addresses essential yet basic topics for classroom instruction, this class pushes you to elevate your performance as an instructor. Although anyone can enroll in this course, it is particularly recommended for those with one year or more of teaching experience, including participants of the Field Training Officer course. Integrating COP and leadership is a course designed to develop officers into competent leaders capable of implementing community policing strategies. This is a two-day class. While this field training officer course will benefit anyone who attends, the target audience includes new officers, field training officers, and those newly stepping into supervision roles.

How many days is the class?
The advanced instructor development classes are held over two full days of instruction unless otherwise noted. Typical hours are from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes; You will receive a certificate via email upon completion of the class.
What do I need to bring?
Please bring something to write with and an open mind, as there will be a lot of discussion during these classes. If you are attending the field training officer course, kindly bring your FTO program policy and any forms you typically use. I understand if you document a trainee's performance electronically, this may not be possible.
Is there a dress code?
No shorts, flip flops, or tank tops are allowed. Business casual attire is preferred.
Are cell phones allowed?
I understand that we are all busy adults. Feel free to bring your phone, but if you need to take a call during class, please step outside to avoid disturbing other students. I prefer that all phones be set to silent.
