The Advanced Field Training Officer course is a two-day program designed to enhance the communication, teaching, and documentation skills of current Field Training Officers (FTOs) as well as department FTO coordinators and commanders. This field training officer course is applicable for both law enforcement and corrections professionals. In today’s litigious society, the importance of effective training and thorough documentation cannot be overstated, especially regarding the crucial role of FTOs in training new officers and minimizing the risk of negligent retention. Through lectures, group discussions, and interactive exercises, participants will engage in advanced instructor development, deepening their knowledge and skills and becoming more effective trainers and mentors. This course serves as an invaluable resource for those committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and excellence in their departments. Additionally, students will explore leadership training for law enforcement, focusing on the FTO as a teacher and mentor and recognizing this role as their first true leadership position. Topics covered include generational differences, overcoming personality conflicts, understanding adult learning distinctions, training mistakes, a review of typical trainee deficiencies along with training techniques to address each issue, and essential documentation practices. Students will also review real body-worn camera videos to integrate the two days of training effectively. This course is certified by the Southeastern FTO Association (SEFTOA).
